Plants
for All Seasons was established in 1973 by Victor Flaherty and his partner
Gene LeRoy. Tom Pearce was hired in 1976 and became a part owner in the
business. There were few homes in the area in those first few years. It
was very much of a struggle but we persevered. Gene left the nursery to
start his own landscaping company in 1980.
1980 was a
year that almost put us out of business. It rained almost every spring
weekend and then we had record drought and temperatures that summer. We
lost 1 Porsche and 4 corvettes in terms of dollars that year. Ouch! This
was a defining year for us. Victor sold his house and put all the equity
that he had back into the business to keep it going.
Business was better until 1985. Our customers, who were in oil, were
reeling from job losses because of the price of oil. Homes lost 30-40% of
their value. Tough times to be in Houston unless you worked for Compaq
which, luckily, was right across the street from the nursery. Tom Pearce
left in 1987 to run his own landscaping company.
During the Christmas holiday in 1989 Houston had 8 degree temperatures.
Much of the landscaping was damaged or destroyed. 1990 was an unbelievably
great year for us. Everyone had to replace shrubs, tropicals and most palm
trees.
Things were very good until 1994
when
the state claimed 2 acres of our property for the freeway expansion. We
had to move back on the
remaining 4 acres and rebuild. We were closed for 4 months. During that
time the State piled about 6 feet of soil between us and the street that
was now about 200 feet away. You can imagine what that combination did to
our business. We got by the best we could until Home Depot opened next
door. Home Depot increased our traffic dramatically and sales were good
again.
Victor’s four children began working in the business starting in the
mid-nineties and have chosen to make the green industry their career.
We are still here today because of
our dedication to quality
and service. We believe the future to be bright if we continue to do the
same things that kept us in business all these years. We are looking ahead
to the next challenge that will face us in the future.
